How to Replace a Watch Crown

Replacing a crown is one of the most common watch repairs, and one of the easiest to get wrong. This guide walks through the fundamentals so your finished job is water-resistant, aligned, and clean.

What you'll need

A case-back opener suited to your case type
A movement holder
Fine tweezers and a stem cutter
The correct crown and gasket for your caliber

1. Identify the caliber

Open the case back and identify the movement. The caliber determines the stem thread pitch (typically 0.90mm) and the correct crown tap size.

2. Pull the stem

Locate the setting-lever release. Press it gently while pulling the stem straight out.

3. Cut the new stem

Dry-fit the new crown on the uncut stem. Mark the length, then cut with a stem cutter — never a rotary tool.

4. Seat the gasket

Lightly lubricate the crown gasket with silicone grease before threading it onto the stem. A dry gasket will fail its water-resistance test.

5. Reinstall and test

Reinstall the stem, set the time, and pressure-test to the case's rated depth before returning the watch to service.
